This hymn, written in rural England in the 19th century, celebrates the autumn harvest that sustained village life through winter. It connects with the Parable of the Wheat and Weeds from Matthew 13 in the Bible. And if it’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving, there’s a very good chance this will be the opening hymn at church that day.
I have included this on in two keys. The first one is D Major (2 sharps). It is a little better key for congregational singing. If you find D Major to be challenging, I have also included a version in C Major (no sharps or flats).
